Turntable and detail shot
Fully rendered inside Unreal Engine 5, this backpack was created for a character under development. The design was inspired heavily by The Division 2 as well as the The Last of Us 2 series, and is meant to be an asset for a character in a post-apocalyptic setting.
The UV sets are 1 x 4k and 2 x 2k for rendering purposes, but the game model will have 1x 2k and 2x 1k maps for optimization. Most of the trims and clips are UV stacked, but some are spread out for variation of detail. The final polycount is at 25k triangles with all the assets.
I initiated the process by gathering references and doing some research on how AAA studios had created backpacks as well as looking for real life images to combine military harnesses with military backpacks. Then I created a foundation inside marvelous designer and sculpted the details in Zbrush. All the trims and assets are modeled in Blender from scratch. UV seams, unwrapping, island straightening and packing was manually done inside blender and the textures are all done in substance painter apart from some normal baking issues that I fixed inside of Photoshop.
This was a great learning experience and I can't wait to keep working with marvelous designer again! Stay tuned for the full character!
